( And remember when We delivered you from the tyranny of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with the worst torment, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. And in that was a great trial from your Lord ) (49)

And remember, O Children of Israel, when We delivered you from the followers of Pharaoh, who were inflicting upon you all kinds of torment, slaughtering your sons so that you would have no survivors, and leaving your daughters alive so that they would become women to serve them, in order to further humiliate and degrade you. And in your deliverance from the tyranny of Pharaoh and his followers was a great test from your Lord, so that you might be grateful.

( And remember when We parted the sea for you, so We saved you and drowned Pharaoh and his people while you were looking on ) (50)

And remember among Our favors upon you that We parted the sea for you, making it a dry path for you to travel upon, so We saved you, and We drowned your enemy Pharaoh and his followers before your very eyes while you were looking on.

( And when We made an appointment with Moses for forty nights, then you took the calf [for worship] after him, while you were wrongdoers ) (51)

And remember among these blessings Our appointment with Moses for forty nights so that the Torah might be revealed as a light and guidance, then all you did was worship the calf during that period, while you were wrongdoers by doing this.

( Then We pardoned you after that so that you might be grateful ) (52)

Then We pardoned you after your repentance, and We did not hold you accountable so that you might be grateful to God by worshipping Him well and obeying Him.

( And when We gave Moses the Scripture and the Criterion so that you might be guided ) (53)

And remember among these blessings that We gave Moses, peace be upon him, the Torah as a criterion between truth and falsehood and a distinction between guidance and misguidance so that you might be guided by it to the truth.

( And when Moses said to his people, “O my people, you have wronged yourselves by taking the calf [for worship]. So repent to your Lord and kill yourselves. That is better for you with your Lord.” Then He accepted your repentance. Indeed, He is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful ) (54)

And remember among these blessings that God enabled you to repent from worshipping the calf, as Moses, peace be upon him, said to you that you have wronged yourselves by taking the calf as a god to worship, so repent and return to your Creator and Originator, by killing one another. Repentance in this manner is better for you than persisting in disbelief that leads to eternal damnation in Hell. So you did that with the help and assistance of God, and He accepted your repentance, for He is most forgiving and merciful to His servants.

( And when you said, “O Moses, we will not believe you until we see God openly,” then the thunderbolt struck you while you were looking on ) (55)

And remember when your forefathers said, addressing Moses, peace be upon him, boldly: “We will not believe you until we see God openly, without any veil from us,” then the scorching fire seized you and killed you, some of you looking at one another.

( Then We resurrected you after your death so that you might be grateful ) (56)

Then We revived you after your death so that you might thank God for His favor upon you in that.

( And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails, [saying], “Eat of the good things with which We have provided you.” And they did not wrong Us, but they wronged themselves ) (57)

And among Our favors upon you was that We sent down clouds to shade you from the heat of the sun when you were lost in the land, and We sent down to you from Our bounties a sweet drink like honey, and a small bird with delicious flesh, resembling a quail, and We said to you, “Eat of the good things with which We have provided you.” And they did not diminish Us in any way by denying and being ungrateful for these favors, but they wronged themselves by diminishing their share of reward and exposing themselves to punishment.

The greatness and abundance of God’s blessings upon the Children of Israel, yet this only increased their arrogance and obstinacy.

The vastness of God’s forbearance and mercy towards His servants, even if their sins are great.

Revelation is the arbiter between truth and falsehood.
