After God described the characteristics of the righteous believers, whose outward and inward selves were upright, He mentioned the characteristics of a group of disbelievers, whose outward and inward selves were corrupt, saying:
( Indeed, those who disbelieve – it is all the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them – they will not believe ) (6)
Indeed, those against whom the word of God has been fulfilled by disbelief will persist in their error and obstinacy, so your warning to them and not warning them is the same.
( God has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment ) (7)
Because God has sealed their hearts, closing them upon the falsehood within them; and He has sealed their hearing so they do not hear the truth with acceptance and submission; and He has placed a veil over their vision so they do not see the truth despite its clarity. And for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.
And when God explained the characteristics of the disbelievers whose outward and inward selves are corrupt, He explained the characteristics of the hypocrites whose inward selves are corrupt while their outward appearance is righteous in what is seen by people, saying:
( And among the people are some who say, “We believe in Allah and the Last Day,” but they are not believers ) (8)
And among the people is a group who claim to be believers, saying so with their tongues out of fear for their lives and wealth, while inwardly they are disbelievers.
( They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not ) (9)
They think, in their ignorance, that they are deceiving Allah and the believers by showing faith and concealing disbelief, but they do not perceive this because Allah Almighty knows the secret and what is hidden, and He has made the believers aware of their characteristics and conditions.
( In their hearts is a disease, so God has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they used to lie ) (10)
The reason is that in their hearts is doubt, so God has increased their doubt upon their doubt, and the reward is of the same kind as the deed. And for them is a painful punishment in the lowest level of Hell, because of their lying about God and about people, and their denial of what Muhammad brought.
( And when it is said to them, “Do not cause corruption on the earth,” they say, “We are only reformers ) (11)
And when they are forbidden from causing corruption on the earth through disbelief, sins, and other things, they deny it and claim that they are the ones who are righteous and reformers.
( Indeed, they are the corrupters, but they do not perceive it ) (12)
The truth is that they are the corrupters, but they do not perceive it, nor do they perceive that their action is the very essence of corruption.
( And when it is said to them, “Believe as the people have believed,” they say, “Shall we believe as the fools have believed?” Unquestionably, it is they who are the fools, but they do not know ) (13)
And when they are commanded to believe as the companions of Muhammad believed, they respond with disapproval and mockery, saying, “Shall we believe like the fools?” The truth is that they are the fools, but they are unaware of it.
( And when they meet those who believe, they say, “We believe”; but when they are alone with their devils, they say, “Indeed, we are with you; we were only mocking ) (14)
And when they meet the believers, they say, “We believe in what you believe in.” They say this out of fear of the believers. And when they turn away from the believers to their leaders, alone with them, they say, affirming their steadfastness in following them, “Indeed, we are with you in your way, but we only outwardly agree with the believers,” mocking and ridiculing them.
( God mocks them and prolongs their transgression so they wander blindly ) (15)
God mocks them in response to their mockery of the believers, a recompense of the same kind as their deeds. Therefore, He applies to them the laws of the Muslims in this world. As for the Hereafter, He will recompense them for their disbelief and hypocrisy. Likewise, He gives them respite so they may persist in their error and transgression, remaining bewildered and hesitant.
( Those are the ones who have purchased error [in exchange] for guidance, so their transaction has brought no profit, nor were they guided ) (16)
Those hypocrites described with those attributes are the ones who exchanged disbelief for faith, so their transaction has brought no profit, because they lost faith in God, and they were not guided to the truth.
Benefits from page 3
That those whose hearts God has sealed because of their obstinacy and denial will not be swayed by signs, however great they may be.
That God’s respite for the unjust deniers was not due to negligence or inability to deal with them, but rather so that they might increase in sin, and thus their punishment would be greater.
