( And when your Lord said to the angels, “Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successor,” they said, “Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we exalt You with praise and declare Your holiness?” He said, “Indeed, I know that which you do not know ) (30)

God Almighty tells that He, Glory be to Him, said to the angels: He will place on the earth human beings who will succeed one another, to carry out its development in obedience to God. So the angels asked their Lord – a question of guidance and inquiry – about the wisdom of making the children of Adam successors on the earth, when they will cause corruption in it, and shed blood unjustly, saying: We are people of obedience to You, we glorify You, we praise You, and we magnify Your majesty and perfection, we will not cease from that. So God answered them to their question: I know what you do not know of the brilliant wisdom in their creation, and the great purposes of their succession.

( And He taught Adam all the names, then presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if you are truthful ) (31)

And to show the status of Adam, peace be upon him, God Almighty taught him the names of all things, including animals, inanimate objects, and others; their words and meanings. Then He presented those names to the angels, saying: Tell Me their names if you are truthful in what you say, that you are more honorable and better than this creature.

( They said, “Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise ) (32)

They said—acknowledging their shortcomings and attributing all credit to God “We declare You free and exalt You, our Lord, above objecting to You in Your decree and law, for we know nothing except what You have granted us of knowledge. Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, from Whom nothing is hidden anything, the All-Wise, Who places things in their proper places according to Your decree and law.

( He said, “O Adam, tell them their names.” And when he had informed them of their names, He said, “Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you conceal? ) (33)

Then God Almighty said to Adam: Tell them the names of those things. So when he told them as his Lord had taught him, God said to the angels: Did I not tell you that I know what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal of your circumstances and what you say to yourselves ?

( And when We said to the angels, “Prostrate to Adam,” they prostrated, except for Iblis. He refused and was arrogant and became one of the disbelievers ) (34)

God Almighty clarifies that He commanded the angels to prostrate to Adam in a prostration of appreciation and respect, so they prostrated hastening to obey God’s command, except for Iblis, who was from the jinn, and he refused in objection to God’s command to prostrate and out of arrogance towards Adam, so he became one of the disbelievers in God Almighty.

( And We said, “O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat freely from it wherever you wish. But do not approach this tree, lest you become wrongdoers ) (35)

And We said, “O Adam, dwell, you and your wife (Eve), in Paradise, and eat freely and abundantly from it, without any discomfort, in any place in Paradise. But beware of approaching this tree from which I have forbidden you to eat, lest you become wrongdoers by disobeying what I have commanded you.

( Then Satan caused them to slip from it and removed them from that [condition] in which they had been. And We said, “Descend, being enemies to one another, and you will have upon the earth a place of settlement and enjoyment for a time. ) (36)

Satan continued to whisper to them and embellish [their sin] until he caused them to slip and sin by eating from that tree which God had forbidden them. So their punishment was that God removed them from the Paradise in which they had been, and God said to them and to Satan: Descend to the earth, being enemies to one another, and you will have upon that earth a place of settlement and enjoyment of its good things until your appointed times end and the Hour comes.

( Then Adam received from his Lord words [of revelation], and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, He is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful. ) (37)

So Adam took what God revealed to him of words, and inspired him to supplicate with them, which are mentioned in His saying, may He be exalted: “They said, ‘Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.’” [Al-A’raf: 23]. So God accepted his repentance and forgave him, for He, glory be to Him, is most accepting of repentance from His servants and most merciful to them.
