( And when We said, “Enter this city and eat freely from wherever you wish, and enter the gate bowing down and say, ‘Repentance!’ We will forgive you your sins and increase the reward for the doers of good ) (58)

And remember the favors of God upon you when We said to you, “Enter Jerusalem and eat freely from whatever good things you wish, wherever you wish, and enter the gate bowing down in submission to God, and ask God, saying, ‘Our Lord, remove our sins from us.’ We will respond to you, and We will increase the reward for those who do good.

( But those who wronged changed the word to something other than what had been said to them, so We sent down upon those who wronged a punishment from the sky because of their transgression ) (59)

So those who wronged among them did nothing but change their actions and distort the word, so they entered crawling on their backsides, saying, “A grain in a hair,” mocking the command of God Almighty. So the punishment was that God sent down upon the wrongdoers among them a punishment from the sky because of their transgression of the limits of the law and their disobedience to the command.

( And when Moses prayed for water for his people, We said, “Strike the rock with your staff,” and there gushed forth from it twelve springs. Each tribe knew its drinking place. “Eat and drink from the provision of God, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption ) (60)

And remember the blessings of God upon you when you were in the wilderness and you were afflicted with severe thirst, so Moses, peace be upon him, supplicated to his Lord and asked Him to give you water. So We commanded him to strike the rock with his staff. When he struck it, twelve springs gushed forth from it, one for each of your tribes, and water flowed from them. And We made clear to each tribe its designated drinking place, so that no dispute would arise among them. And We said to you, “Eat and drink from the provision of God which He has brought to you without any effort or work on your part, and do not strive in the land, causing corruption therein.

( And when you said, “O Moses, we will never endure one kind of food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us some of what the earth produces—its herbs, its wild cucumbers, its garlic, its lentils, and its onions,” he said, “Would you exchange what is inferior for what is superior? Go down to Egypt, for there you will find what you asked for.” And they were covered with humiliation and misery and incurred the wrath of God. That is what they did. Because they used to disbelieve in the verses of God and kill the prophets unjustly. That was because they disobeyed and were transgressors ) (61)

And remember when you were ungrateful for the blessings of your Lord, and you grew weary of eating what God had sent down to you of manna and quails. You said, “We cannot endure one unchanging food,” so you asked Moses, peace be upon him, to pray to God to bring forth for you from the plants of the earth—its herbs, its greens, its vines (which resemble cucumbers but are larger), its grains, its lentils, and its onions—as food. Moses, peace be upon him, rebuked your request, saying, “Would you exchange what is less and inferior for manna and quails, which are better and more generous, and which used to come to you without toil or hardship? Go down from this land to any village, and you will find what you asked for in its fields and markets.” Because of their following their desires and their repeated turning away from what God had chosen for them, humiliation, poverty, and misery became their constant companions. They returned with God’s wrath because of their turning away from His religion, their disbelief in His signs, and their unjust and aggressive killing of His prophets. All of this was because they disobeyed God and transgressed His limits.

Whoever tampers with and distorts the texts of Islamic law has a Jewish element in him, and he is threatened with God’s punishment.

The greatness of God’s favor upon the Children of Israel, and in contrast to that, the intensity of their denial, obstinacy, and turning away from God and His law.

Among the ill consequences of sins and transgressing God’s limits is the humiliation and disgrace that befalls a person, and the domination of enemies over him.
