( They said, “Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is. Indeed, the cows look alike to us, and we, God willing, will be guided ) (70)

Then they persisted in their obstinacy, saying, “Call upon your Lord to make clear to us more of its characteristics, because there are many cows with the mentioned characteristics, and we cannot identify it among them.” They affirmed that, God willing, they would be guided to the cow that was to be slaughtered.

( He said, “He says, ‘It is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the fields, sound and without blemish.’ They said, ‘You have come with the truth!’ So they slaughtered it, though they were reluctant to do so ) (71)

Moses said to them, “God says that the description of this cow is that it is not trained to work in plowing or irrigating the land, and it is sound and without blemishes, with no mark of any color other than its yellow color.” Then they said, “Now you have come with the precise description that identifies the cow perfectly,” and they slaughtered it, though they were reluctant not to do so because of the argument and obstinacy.

( Remember when you killed a soul and disputed over it, but God was to bring out that which you were concealing ) (72)

And remember when you killed one of your own and disputed over it, each one of you defending himself against the accusation of murder and throwing it at another, until you disputed, but God was to bring out that which you were concealing of the killing of that innocent one.

( said, “Strike him with a part of it.” Thus does God bring the dead to life, and He shows you His signs so that you may understand ) (73)

So We said to you, “Strike the slain man with a part of the cow that you were commanded to slaughter, for God will bring him back to life so that he may reveal who his killer was!” So they did that, and he revealed his killer. And just as He brought this dead man back to life, God will bring the dead back to life on the Day of Resurrection, and He will show you clear signs of His power, so that you may understand them and truly believe in God Almighty.

( Then your hearts hardened after that, so they are like stones or even harder. For indeed, there are stones from which rivers burst forth, and there are some that split open and water flows from them, and there are some that fall down for fear of God. And God is not unaware of what you do ) (74)

Then your hearts hardened after these eloquent admonitions and dazzling miracles, until they became like stones, or even harder than them; for they never change from their state, while stones change and transform. For among stones are those from which rivers burst forth, and among them are those that split open and water comes out as flowing springs in the earth, from which people and animals benefit, and among them are those that fall from the tops of mountains out of fear and awe of God. But your hearts are not like that, and God is not unaware of what you do, but He knows it and will recompense you for it.

( Do you then expect them to believe in you, when a group of them used to hear the word of God, then distort it after they had understood it, while they knew? ) (75)

Do you, O believers, expect, after you have learned the truth about the Jews and their obstinacy, that they will believe and respond to you?! A group of their scholars used to hear the word of God revealed to them in the Torah, then they would change its words and meanings after they had understood it and knew it, while they knew the enormity of their crime.

( And when they meet those who believe, they say, “We believe”; but when they are alone with one another, they say, “Do you tell them what Allah has revealed to you so that they may argue with you about it before your Lord? Then will you not reason? ) (76)

It is from the contradictions and cunning of the Jews that when some of them meet May God’s prayers and peace be upon him the believers, they acknowledge to them the truthfulness of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and the validity of his message, which is attested to by the Torah. But when the Jews are alone with one another, they blame each other because of these acknowledgments, because the Muslims use them as evidence against them regarding what they have said in acknowledging the truthfulness of the prophethood.

From the benefits of page 11

That some people’s hearts are harder than solid stone; they do not soften to admonition, nor do they show tenderness at remembrance.

That proofs and evidences – however great – are of no use if the heart is not submissive and humble before God.

The verses revealed the truth of what the Jews harbored in their souls, as they inherited recklessness, deceit, and manipulation of religion.
