( Do they not know that God knows what they conceal and what they reveal? ) (77)

These Jews are following this shameful path as if they are unaware that God knows what they conceal of their words and deeds and what they reveal of them, and He will reveal it to His servants and expose them.

( And among them are unlettered people who do not know the Scripture except through wishful thinking, and they are only guessing ) (78)

And among the Jews is a group who do not know the Torah except by recitation and do not understand what it indicates, and they have nothing but lies that they took from their elders, thinking that it is the Torah that God revealed.

( So woe to those who write the Scripture with their own hands, then say, ‘This is from Allah,’ in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn ) (79)

So destruction and severe punishment await those who write the Scripture with their own hands and then say—falsely—“This is from God,” in order to exchange the truth and following guidance for a paltry price in this world, such as money and leadership. So destruction and severe punishment await them for what their hands have written of their lies against God, and destruction and severe punishment await them for what they earn from that of money and leadership.

( said, “The Fire will not touch us except for a few days.” Say, “Have you taken a covenant with Allah? For Allah will never break His covenant. Or do you say about Allah what you do not know? ) (80)

And they said—falsely and arrogantly—”The Fire will not touch us, and we will not enter it except for a few days.” Say, O Prophet, to these people: Have you taken a firm promise from Allah regarding this? If you have, then Allah will never break His covenant. Or are you saying about Allah what you do not know? falsely and deceitfully.

( Yes, whoever commits evil and is surrounded by his sin – those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally ) (81)

It is not as these people imagine; for God punishes everyone who commits the evil of disbelief, and whose sins surround him from every side, and He recompenses them by making them enter the Fire and remain therein forever.

( And those who believed and did righteous deeds – those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally ) (82)

And those who believed in God and His Messenger and did righteous deeds, their reward with God is entering Paradise and remaining therein forever.

( And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], “Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak good words to people and establish prayer and give zakah.” Then you turned away, except a few of you, while you were refusing ) (83)

And remember, O Children of Israel, the firm covenant which We took from you, that you should worship God alone and not worship any other besides Him, and that you should be kind to parents, relatives, orphans, and the needy, and that you should speak kindly to people, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong without harshness or severity, and that you should perform the prayer completely as I commanded you, and that you should give the zakat by distributing it to those who deserve it willingly. Then after this covenant which was taken from you, you turned away, refusing to fulfill it, except for those whom God protected from among you, so they fulfilled their covenant and pledge to God.

Some of the People of the Book claim to know what God has revealed, but the truth is they have no knowledge of what God has revealed; it is merely delusion and ignorance.

Among the greatest sinners are those who lie about God Almighty and His Messengers, attributing to them what they did not do.

Despite the greatness of the covenants that God Almighty took from the Jews and the strong emphasis placed upon them, this only increased their turning away from them and their rejection of them.
