( And when We took your covenant, [saying]: “Do not shed your blood or expel yourselves from your homes.” Then you acknowledged it while you were witnessing ) (84)

Remember the solemn covenant that We took from you in the Torah, that you should not shed each other’s blood, and that you should not expel each other from their homes. Then you acknowledged the covenant that We took from you, and you bear witness to its truth.

( Then you are those who kill one another and expel a group of your own people from their homes, supporting one another against them in sin and transgression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, even though it is forbidden for you to expel them. So do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part? Then what is the recompense for those who do that among you except disgrace in worldly life; and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest punishment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do ) (85)

Then you break this covenant; you kill one another, and you expel a group of your people from their homes, unjustly and aggressively seeking the help of enemies against them. And when they come to you as captives in the hands of the enemies, you strive to pay ransom to free them from captivity, even though expelling them from their homes is forbidden to you. So how can you believe in some of what is in the Torah regarding the obligation to ransom captives, and disbelieve in some of what is in it regarding the preservation of blood and the prohibition of expelling one another from their homes?! So there is no reward for whoever does that among you except humiliation and disgrace in this worldly life, and as for the Hereafter, he will be returned to the severest punishment. And God is not unaware of what you do, rather He is aware of it, and He will recompense you for it.

( Those are the ones who have purchased the life of this world in exchange for the Hereafter, so their punishment will not be lightened, nor will they be helped ) (86)

Those who have exchanged this worldly life for the Hereafter, preferring the fleeting over the eternal, will not have their punishment lessened in the Hereafter, and they will have no helper to aid them on that day.

( And We gave Moses the Scripture and sent after him messengers. And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs and supported him with the Holy Spirit. So is it that whenever a messenger comes to you with something which your souls do not desire, you become arrogant? And a group [of them] you deny, and a group you kill ) (87)

And We gave Moses the Torah, and followed him with messengers after him, and We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear signs that demonstrated his truthfulness, such as raising the dead, healing the blind, and healing the leper, and We strengthened him with the angel Gabriel, peace be upon him. So whenever a messenger comes to you, O Children of Israel, from God with something that does not agree with your desires, you become arrogant towards the truth and disdainful of God’s messengers, so that you deny some of them and kill others?!

( They said, “Our hearts are wrapped.” Rather, Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so little do they believe ) (88)

The Jews’ argument for not following Muhammad was that their hearts were sealed and nothing they said reached them, nor did they understand it. But the situation was not as they claimed. Rather, God expelled them from His mercy because of their disbelief, so they do not believe except in a little of what God revealed.

One of the greatest forms of disbelief is believing in some of what God has revealed and disbelieving in some of it, because the one who does this has made his own desires his god.

The extent of the Jews’ obstinacy, their following of their desires, and their manipulation of what God Almighty has revealed is immense.

God Almighty’s favor and mercy upon His creation, as He continued to send messengers and reveal scriptures to guide them to the right path.

God punishes those who turn away from guidance and defy His commands by sealing their hearts and expelling them from His mercy, so they are neither guided to the truth nor do they act upon it.
