And they followed what the devils recited concerning the kingdom of Solomon. And Solomon did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. And they did not teach anyone until they said, “We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve.” And they learned from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And they learn what harms them and does not benefit them. And they have already known to whom He has bought it, and he will have no share in the Hereafter. And how wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if only they knew. [Al-Baqarah: 102]
When they abandoned the religion of God, they followed instead what the devils falsely attributed to the kingship of the Prophet Solomon, peace be upon him. They claimed that his kingdom was established through magic. Solomon did not disbelieve by practicing magic, as the Jews claimed, but the devils disbelieved because they taught people magic, specifically the magic revealed to the two angels Harut and Marut in the city of Babylon in Iraq as a test and trial for the people. These two angels did not teach magic to anyone without first warning them and explaining, “We are only a test and trial for the people, so do not disbelieve by learning magic.” Those who did not heed their advice learned magic from them, including a type that separates a man from his wife by sowing hatred between them. Those magicians cannot harm anyone except by God’s permission and will, and they learn what harms them and does not benefit them. Those Jews knew that whoever exchanges the Book of God for magic will have no share or portion in the Hereafter. How wretched is that for which they sold themselves, exchanging God’s revelation and law for magic! If they had known what would benefit them, they would not have done so. For this shameful act and clear error.
“If only they had believed and feared Allah, then the reward from Allah would have been better, if only they knew.” [Al-Baqarah: 103]
If the Jews had truly believed in God and feared Him by obeying Him and refraining from disobeying Him, God’s reward would have been better for them than what they are currently experiencing, if only they knew what would benefit them.
O you who have believed, do not say, “Ra’ina,” but say, “Unzurna,” and listen. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment. [Al-Baqarah: 104]
God Almighty directs the believers to choose their words carefully, saying to them: O you who have believed, do not say, distorting it and addressing the Prophet with it, intending by it a corrupt meaning, which is recklessness. So God forbade this word to close this door, and commanded His servants to say instead the word: “Ra’ina” (meaning: be mindful of our affairs); because the Jews peace be upon him said about it: “Unzurna” (meaning: wait for us so we may understand what you say), and it is a word that conveys the meaning without objection. And for the disbelievers in God is a painful and grievous punishment.
Those who disbelieve among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists do not wish that any good should be sent down to you from your Lord. But Allah chooses for His mercy whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty. [Al-Baqarah: 105]
What the disbelievers like – whether they are People of the Book or polytheists – is that any good should be sent down to you from your Lord, whether little or much. And God singles out for His mercy of prophethood, revelation, and faith whomever He wills of His servants. And God is the possessor of great bounty, so no good comes to anyone of creation except from Him, and from His bounty is the sending of the Messenger and the revelation of the Book.

The Jews’ disrespect towards God’s prophets, as they attributed the practice of magic to Solomon, peace be upon him, but God exonerated him from it and refuted their claim.
That magic is real and has an effect on minds and bodies, and the magician is an unbeliever, and his punishment is death.
Nothing good or evil occurs in God’s dominion except by His permission and knowledge.
Blocking the means to evil is one of the objectives of Islamic law, so every statement or action that suggests corrupt matters must be avoided and distanced from.
That all favor is in the hands of God Almighty, and He bestows it upon whomever He wills by His mercy and wisdom.
